Tournament Champions
Golfers on the Upstate Amatuer Players Tour enjoyed an ideal fall day for golf this past Saturday, as the tour hosted its second tournament of the new season at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club in Inman, SC.
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour offers golfers of all skill levels an opportunity to compete against a level playing field. With five different divisions the Upstate Amateur Players Tour designed by the players and for the players, ensuring a world-class experience for its players.
Saturday, the golfers enjoyed a beautiful day filled with sunny skies and moderate temperatures. Nestled in Inman, South Carolina, Woodfin Ridge Golf Club is one of the most pristine courses in the area. At the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Woodfin Ridge is located along Lake Bowen and features several scenic holes, including the feature finishing holes of No. 9 and No. 18.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from each division:
Division 1 – Jody Clary settled into his round quickly, firing just one-over par on the front nine en route to a round of 79 as he won Division 1 on Saturday. Clary took advantage of the short par-four third hole, making birdie to help offset two early bogies. Clary made another birdie on the par-four 12th hole as he carded a round of 42 on the back nine.
Shayne Burger finished second in the division with a round of 83. After a tough start to the round, Burger birdied two out of his final three holes. He added a third birdie on the par-four 13th hole.
Division 2 – Scott Nichols outlasted a crowded field of challengers in Division 2 as his round of 75 proved to be enough to clear the field by two strokes. Nichols saved his best golf for the back nine, birding the first two holes of the inward stretch. Nichols added a third back nine birdie on the par-four 17th hole en route to victory.
Jeff Pauley, Dan Eastep, Dean Crouch, Dylan Hampton, and Zack Boyd finished third for second place as all five golfers posted rounds of 77. Boyd led the division with five birdies, including three in his final seven holes to close the round. Hampton also had three birdies on the back nine, including consecutive ones on the 12th and 13th holes.
Weston Brown and Eric Stanwick finished tied for seventh place with rounds of 79. Brown closed the front nine strong, making two birdies in his final three holes. Stanwick kept his scorecard relatively clean throughout the day, avoiding the big numbers as he made 11 pars.
Division 3 – Ronnie Strange and Dylon Kelly found themselves locked in a tight battle down the stretch as in the end, it was Strange who emerged victorious with a round of 78. Strange made two birdies on the day, the last of which came on the short par-four 16th hole.
Kelly attempted to make a back nine charge, bouncing back from a double bogey on the 11th hole with seven consecutive pars to conclude his round. Kelly finished with 13 pars on the day, securing the runner-up finish.
Cody Markovich finished in third place with a round of 82, followed by Myron Samuels, John Pearson, and John Beck who tied for fourth place to round out the top five.
Division 4 – Eighteen holes of golf proved to not be enough to decide a winner in Division 4, as Ryan Riffle and David Croston found themselves tied with rounds of 82. When the dust settled, it was Riffle who prevailed in the playoff. After a tough start, Riffle pared five out of his last six holes on the front nine to settle into the round.
Croston saved his best golf for the back nine, making five pars, including four in a row. His solid play on the back nine allowed him to reach the playoff, eventually finishing in the runner-up position.
Peter Fahey and Billy Trull tied for third place with rounds of 85. Fahey finished his round strong with a round of 41 on the back nine. Trull led the division with two birdies on the day, both of which came on par threes. Scott Bryant rounded out the top five with a round of 89.
Division 5 – Tim Kunkel took home the top spot in Division 5 on Saturday with a round of 87, clearing his nearest challenger by just a single stroke. Kunkel made two birdies on the day, including one on the par-three 11th hole as he played the first four holes of the back nine in one over par.
Bruce Reeves finished close behind with a round of 88 in second place. Reeves’ highlight of the round came on the par-four 12th hole as he made birdie. Vern Verna finished third finished third with a round of 89 as he attempted to make a back nine charge. Verna made two birdies in a three-hole stretch as he carded a round of 43 on the back nine.
Eric Barnes fired a round of 92 to finish fourth, followed by Desmond Smith and Dick Jenkins in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 94.
Mid-Am Division (Net) – While Bruce Reeves came up just short of the top spot in Division 5, his net round of 66 cleared the field by three strokes in the Mid-Am Net Division. Reeves shot net 33 on the back nine, including three net birdies and a net eagle on the par-four 12th hole.
Ryan Riffle finished second with a net round of 69, featuring seven birdies and an eagle. Weston Brown and Dylon Kelly tied for third place with net rounds of 71.
Zack Boyd rounded out the top five in the division with an ever par round of 72.
Senior Division (Net) – Richard Johnson had a stellar back nine, carding a round of 65 to win the Senior Net Division. Johnson made three net birdies in his first four holes on the back nine before consecutive net eagles on the 16th and 17th holes.
Tim Kunkel and Vern Verna finished tied for second place with net rounds of 67. Verna carded a round of 32 on the back nine, including three net eagles on the closing stretch.
Ronnie Strange finished fourth with a net round of 68, followed by Jeff Pauley and Peter Fahey in fifth place with rounds of 69.
