Dramatic Finales and Cup Spots Decided at Strawberry Farms 

IRVINE, CA — The Amateur Players Tour season reached a thrilling conclusion on Saturday, August 29th, at Strawberry Farms Golf Club. With Player of the Year titles across seven divisions and coveted spots on the Southwest Cup team on the line, the competition brought high-stakes drama from the opening tee shot to the final ruling. 

Division 1: A Climax Decided by the Rules 

Division 1 was a tight, back-and-forth battle all day. Riley Kline of San Dimas, CA, fired a 3-over-par 74 to edge out Josh Caldwell (Temecula, CA) and Benjamin Battey (Torrance, CA) who both finished just one stroke back at 75. A dramatic three-way playoff was nearly on the horizon, but the tournament came down to a critical ruling from the Pro Shop regarding a lateral hazard versus a lost ball. The decision went in Kline’s favor, sealing the victory, securing his spot on the Southwest Cup team, and earning him Runner-Up Player of the Year honors. Caldwell’s clutch performance also punched his ticket to the Southwest Cup team. 

Division 2: Early Clubhouse Lead Holds On 

AJ Quintero returned seeking another tournament win, finding himself paired with season points leaders Mark Iriarte and Jayson Huett. However, it was Andres Viramontes, playing in an earlier group, who posted a solid round of 78 to set the score to beat. Mark battled back admirably after taking a triple bogey and double bogey to take second with 79, while AJ tied with Thomas Crowder for third with 80’s. In the end, Viramontes’ early target held up for the victory. Viramontes, Iriarte, and Huett all officially secured their positions on the Southwest Cup team along with Even Leonard. 

Division 3: The Spoiler Steals the Show 

The Division 3 contest was the tightest battle of the entire day. Ryan Maramis needed a win to snatch Player of the Year honors from season leader Blake Moorman, while six other golfers fought viciously for the remaining two Southwest Cup positions. Enter Joshua Carter—out of the points hunt, but playing the role of total spoiler. Carter shot an impressive 78 to capture the tournament win, holding off Keith Manchester, Sean Michael, and Gary Lamb. With Maramis and Moorman both finishing mid-pack, Moorman held his lead to claim the Player of the Year title. Meanwhile, Zack Jellsey and Kent Muraoka claimed the final two SoCal spots for the Southwest Cup. 

Division 4: Dark Horse Charges to the Finish 

All eyes were on Kurt Odegard and Brad Forsyth coming into the finals, as both looked poised to walk away with the Player of the Year title. Instead, Royce Jiang—who started the day in fourth place—mounted a furious charge from behind, firing a division-best 78 to win the tournament. Jiang fell just 13 points short of taking the overall season crown, as Forsyth’s second-place finish gave him just enough points to hold off Jiang for Player of the Year. 

Division 5: Three-Hole Playoff Thriller 

Division 5 delivered classic drama as Eddy Moore and David Cavanaugh battled down the stretch, both recording great rounds of 90. The two went head-to-head in a sudden-death playoff that required three extra holes before Moore finally prevailed to take the win. Joining them as tough-to-beat additions to the Southwest Cup team are Tommy Weatherby, runner-up player of the year, and Clark Decker. 

Net Division Highlights 

Both the Mid-Am Net and Senior Net titles came down to dramatic card-offs: 

• Mid-Am Net: Royce Jiang added to his big day by winning the card-off over Joshua Carter, who both shot 66s.  

• Senior Net: David Raffety secured the victory on a card-off over Thomas Meagher after both players turned in stellar rounds of 1-under-par (-1).
