Tournament Champions
For players searching for Utah amateur golf tournaments or premier Wasatch Front golf events, the Amateur Players Tour opened its 2027 season on Saturday, October 3rd at the Fall Classic at The Oaks at Spanish Fork in Spanish Fork, Utah. A field of 66 players was spread across seven contests, with the first points of the new season on the line.
In Division 1, Stuart Wallin of Taylorsville turned in 1-over 37 and held on for a one-shot win at 5-over 77, the third-lowest round anywhere in the field. Three birdies — at the par-5 7th, the par-4 8th and the par-5 10th — carried the day, and he played the closing three holes in 1 over to keep the margin intact. Lindsay Cook, in from Bozeman, Montana, made the hardest run at him, going out in 2-over 38 with ten pars on the card and birdies at the par-5 10th and the par-5 18th before signing for 6-over 78. Isaac Higham of South Salt Lake came home in 2-over 38 to finish at 7-over 79, while Jeff Clifford of Eagle Mountain matched that inward 2-over 38 after a 6-over 42 start and settled at 8-over 80. Six players finished within seven shots of the lead.
Division 2 produced the low round of the day. Shawn Larsen of South Jordan was the model of symmetry, going out in 1-over 37 and home in 1-over 37 for a 2-over 74, built on eleven pars, three birdies — the par-4 5th, the par-4 8th and the par-3 12th — and just a single blemish worse than bogey. It was good for a two-shot win over Mathew Ruybal of Layton, who made an eagle at the par-3 17th on his way to 2-over 38 on each nine and a 4-over 76. Bobby Keyes, also of Layton, made four birdies — at the par-5 7th, the par-4 9th and back-to-back at the par-4 14th and par-4 15th — and closed at 8-over 80 to round out the money positions. Behind that trio the division bunched hard: five players signed for 9-over 81, among them Equator Pohahau, Kendrik Gibson, KC Lunt, Steven Beckstead and Tyler Moore. Lunt was the only man in that group to play his last three holes under par, birdieing the par-5 18th.
Division 3 belonged to Matt Quarnberg of South Weber, who went out in 2-over 38 with birdies at the par-5 7th and the par-4 8th, added another at the par-4 13th, and came home in 4-over 40 for a 6-over 78 and a one-stroke victory. Spencer Evans of American Fork pushed him to the last, making the turn in even-par 36 with birdies at the par-4 5th and the par-5 7th before a 7-over 43 inward nine left him at 7-over 79. Zane Lindsey of South Jordan birdied the par-5 10th and the par-4 13th en route to 9-over 81 to round out the money positions, and Curtis Sharp of Tooele, who opened with a birdie at the par-5 1st and added two more at the par-3 6th and the par-3 12th, finished fourth at 11-over 83.
Division 4 went to Mark Amann of Spanish Fork, whose 6-over 42 on the outward nine set up a 16-over 88 and a two-shot win. Alan McGraw of St. George and Jim Browning of Draper shared runner-up honors at 18-over 90, McGraw flipping the switch after the turn to play the inward nine in 7-over 43 following an 11-over 47 start, and Browning doing the opposite, opening in 5-over 41 before the back nine ran to 13-over 49. Dennis McGraw, also of Spanish Fork, was fourth at 20-over 92 after a 6-over 42 start that included a birdie at the par-4 4th.
In Division 5, Eric Scoonover of Ogden won by a single stroke at 20-over 92, and he did it without a bogey on the card — three birdies, at the par-5 7th, the par-5 10th and the par-4 14th, six pars, and everything else in heavier ink. Toby Pomikala of Tooele gave chase but fell short at 21-over 93, going out in 8-over 44 before the closing stretch bit. Bret Strong of Sandy and Todd Fowles of Riverton tied for third at 23-over 95, Fowles recovering from a 13-over 49 start to trim it to 10-over 46 coming home with a birdie at the par-4 9th. Eight players finished within five shots of the lead.
The Mid-Am Net game went to Spencer Evans, who completed the double-dip after his runner-up finish in Division 3 by posting net even-par 72 for a two-shot win. Tyler Moore was next at net 2-over 74, his gross round turned around by a 2-over 38 inward nine that included a birdie at the par-4 15th. Jim Browning and Mark Amann tied for third at net 5-over 77 apiece.
Senior Net was where the numbers finally dipped under par. Matt Quarnberg made it a sweep, adding net 3-under 69 to his Division 3 title and winning both sides of his ledger by a single stroke. Shawn Larsen also doubled up, taking runner-up honors at net 2-under 70 to go with his Division 2 win. Kennneth Desaussure of Hooper was third at net even-par 72, and Equator Pohahau of Spanish Fork finished fourth at net 2-over 74 after coming home in 3-over 39.
