[read_time]

The APT California Chapters headed to the Reno/Tahoe area for the two-day Western States Stableford at Old Greenwood and Wolf Run. Following the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship held at Old Greenwood, the APT would also adopt a Modified Stableford Scoring System. Players were rewarded with 15 points for Albatross, 7 points for Eagle, 4 points for Birdie, 2 points for Par, 1 point for Bogey, 0 points for Double Bogey and -1 point for Triple Bogey. The temperatures were on the warm side, but the light breeze kept things reasonably pleasant for the group.

Division 1 Champion was Tyler Gerace who made the trip north from Scottsdale, AZ. Tyler jumped out to an early lead on day one after collecting 22 points from his opening 9 two under 34. He would finish the round with a total of 40 points leading division 1 by 12 points over new member Chase Shears’s opening round 28 points. Day two brought similar results in the opening 9 as Tyler collected 23 total points from five pars, three birdies and one bogey. He completed the back 9 with 16 points, totaling 39 for the day, and a two-day total of 79 points. Tyler took home a $240 visa gift card and Tahoe Blue Trophy.

Division 2 Champion was North Cal Chapter Owner Matt Fegley. This is Matt’s first win on the North Cal Tour and was a proud moment for him as he was able to finally best some of his favorite competitors. Day one leader was North Cal APT legend Felix Monjes who played well and finished his day with 32 points. Felix was trailed by UT Ganaprakasam and his solid day of 29 points. South Cal member and frequent traveler to North Cal Troy Shedeed was still in the game with his 25 points. Billy Witt, Matt Fegley and Twon Fullman with 22,22 and 21 points respectively were down but not completely out of it. Day two Matt made a move finishing the opening 9 with 19 points, UT gathered 15 to take the lead by one, Billy would collect 15 to keep close, while Felix would only gather 4 points and fall to fourth after a difficult opening 9. The top three would all stay close and just when things looked like they were settled, the 16th hole would see a Birdie by UT, Par by Billy, and Bogey by Matt to make things razor thin.  UT and Matt were tied at 51 and Billy had 50 as they played the 17th hole. All the players would make Bogey and moved to the 18th all within one point. Matt would make Par and both Billy and UT would make bogey to finalize the victory for Matt.  Matt was awarded a $380 visa gift card and Tahoe Blue Trophy. UT’s second place finish resulted in him taking home a $100 visa gift card.

Division 3 Champion was North Cal member AJ Quintero. Day one saw three players separate themselves from the field at Old Greenwood.  AJ led the way with 28 points, Marty Martinez collected 24 and Chance Pippin collected 20. Early in day two Chance made an early statement by his back-to-back birdies on the first two holes to cut the lead to four points after AJ started with two pars. These two continued their battle on back 9 where it narrowed to two points after Chance made birdie on the 11th. Chance then tied things up after another birdie on the 15th. The two players would make bogey and par on the next two and head to the 18th tee all tied up with 57 points. AJ made a par and collected 2 points while Chance had to settle for double bogey and 0 points after hitting one out of play.  It was a great battle between these two as they both played very well besting the Division 2 Champion. This is AJ’s first two-day win and third overall victory on the year. AJ was awarded a $325 gift card and Tahoe Blue trophy for the win. Chance’s solid play and second place finish were rewarded with a $100 visa gift card.

Division 4 was a close race after round one. Salvador Montalvo Jr, representing the South Cal Chapter, led the way and Rohit Desai, representing the North Cal Chapter, was right on his tail with scores of 22 points and 18 points, on the challenging Old Greenwood layout. On day two Rohit collected 13 points on the front 9 to inch within three of Salvador at the turn, and the margin remained three heading to the par 5 15th hole. A birdie from Sal was worth 4 points vs. Rohit’s 1 point bogey, which provided the cushion for Montalvo to take home the Tahoe Blue trophy and a $180 visa gift card for his second straight victory on the season!

Division 5 was also tight after day one. Juan Martinez opened with an excellent 96 at Old Greenwood, good for 13 Stableford points. John Spradling was just two back with 11 points and Michael Cosselman in the mix with 4 points. It was a slow start for the contenders on day 2, with John briefly taking the lead on the front 9 before a birdie from Juan put him back in front heading to the final 9 holes. John, fighting a neck injury, powered through with an excellent 10 points on the back 9 to pull away late! Spradling took home the Tahoe Blue trophy and a $180 visa gift card for his efforts, congrats John!
