Burditt’s Hole-in-One Headlines Memorable Day at Weibring Golf Club
One swing can create a memory that lasts a lifetime, and Ansel Burditt did exactly that during the Amateur Players Tour Central Illinois stop at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois, home of the Illinois State Redbirds. Burditt electrified the field by making a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th hole, holing a perfectly struck 9-iron for one of golf’s rarest accomplishments. The ace highlighted an exciting day that also featured a playoff in Division 3, impressive scoring across the field, and champions crowned in seven competitions while competing for a $3,630 purse.
🏆 Division 1 – Dunn Rises to the Top
Stephen Dunn of Champaign put together the steadiest round in Division 1, carding a 79 (+8) to earn a convincing four-shot victory over John Mauck. On a day when the course tested every aspect of players’ games, Dunn avoided the costly mistakes that plagued much of the field and separated himself with consistent golf from start to finish.
Mauck finished runner-up at 83 (+12), while Josh Kilcullen claimed third after posting an 84 (+13).
🏆 Division 2 – Jones Fires Tournament-Low Round
Ty Jones turned in the round of the day, shooting a 72 (+1) to capture the Division 2 championship by three strokes. His near-par performance was the lowest gross score of the tournament and showcasedsteady ball striking on one of the day’s toughest tests.
Dan Punkay continued his strong season with a runner-up finish at 75 (+4), followed by Gary Rockow in third at 76 (+5).
Although Jones claimed the division title, one of the day’s biggest moments belonged to Ansel Burditt, whose spectacular hole-in-one on the 17th hole will undoubtedly be remembered long after the scores are forgotten. Burditt’s ace with a 9-iron provided the highlight of the tournament and gave everyone in attendance something special to witness.
🏆 Division 3 – Moore Prevails in Playoff
Division 3 produced the day’s most dramatic finish as Zachary Moore and Cleat Davis each posted 79 (+8) to force a sudden-death playoff.
Moore sealed the victory on the opening playoff hole after making bogey, while Davis carded a double bogey, giving Moore his well-earned championship.
William Evans narrowly missed joining the playoff after finishing just one stroke back with an 80 (+9), while Jamison Boyd finished fourth at 83 (+12). Greg Mitchell and David Johnson shared fifth at 84 (+13).
🏆 Division 4 – Park Pulls Away
Darrell Park delivered one of the day’s most dominant performances, shooting 81 (+10) to cruise to a five-shot victory in Division 4.
Edward Pavese finished second with an 86 (+15), while Chase Runyon and Joshua Weeks shared third after each carded 87 (+16). Mike Prince and Edward Watkins rounded out the top finishers with matching 89 (+18) rounds.
🏆 Division 5 – Schroeder Breaks Through
Myron Schroeder earned his first victory of the 2026 season, posting a 92 (+21) to claim the Division 5 title.
Keith Schumacher finished just two strokes back at 94 (+23), while Kyle Jones placed third with a 100 (+29).
After several close calls this season, Schroeder finally found the winner’s circle, giving him valuable momentum as the season enters its second half.
🏆 Mid-Am Net – Davis Bounces Back
Despite the disappointment of falling in the Division 3 playoff, Cleat Davis responded in impressive fashion by capturing the Mid-Am Net title with a 68 (-3).
Davis edged Zachary Moore and Darrell Park, who each finished at 69 (-2), proving his ability to quickly put the playoff loss behind him and finish the day with a championship.
🏆 Senior Net – Evans Claims Another Trophy
William Evans added to an already outstanding day by winning the Senior Net competition with a 70 (-1), the only under-par net score in the field.
Danny Kwilas finished second at even-par 71, followed by Greg Mitchell at 72 (+1), giving Evans another trophy to accompany his strong third-place finish in Division 3.
🎯 Closest-to-the-Pin
Danny Kwilas capped off an impressive day by winning the Closest-to-the-Pin contest. His tee shot finished just 4 feet, 7 inches from the hole, earning him the $490 prize.
Gary Rockow also came close with an excellent shot to 8 feet, 7 inches, but Kwilas’ precision proved unbeatable.
Looking Ahead
The Central Illinois Chapter wastes no time getting back into competition as players head to Mattoon Golf & Country Club tomorrow for another opportunity to climb the Player of the Year standings.
Attention will then shift to the chapter’s signature event of the season, the River City Classic, set for July 25-26. The two-day championship will be contested at Coyote Creek Golf Club in Bartonville and Weaver Ridge Golf Club in Peoria, bringing together players from across the region for one of the most prestigious weekends on the Central Illinois schedule. With Player of the Year races beginning to tighten and momentum building throughout the field, the River City Classic promises to be one of the marquee events of the 2026 season.
