APT Oklahoma City’s Chapter Finals tournament was a success playing out over 2 days on the Redbud course at Winstar World Casino and Resort. APT OKC hosts tournament around the central Oklahoma area with contests between different skilled players. We offer 5 divisions anywhere from 3.4 handicap and below to 18.5 handicap and above. Winners of our tournaments score anywhere from under par in division 1 to 90 in division 5. Players of all skill are welcome to play. We offer a pro-type atmosphere with your name announced on the first tee, a schedule of tournaments on courses you may not otherwise play, great camaraderie, and competition you miss from your days of playing competitive sports. Winstar Redbud course was in great shape, well manicured, perfect fairways, and greens that rolled pure. I would like to thank the staff at Winstar Golf Course, (Derek, Jeff, and others) for the hospitality and service. I also want to give a big shout out to the course maintenance staff for doing a great job in caring for the course. Players loved it! A world class facility and experience!
Players were treated to a challenging two days with Saturday set up for scoring and Sunday set up to bring out the best players. The fairways are pretty big, but with the wind and different angles of tee shots, players were still searching the native areas for their ball. Heat on both days made it taxing as the final nine on Sunday, players were feeling the grind and wearing effect of the heat.
Division 1
The top player of the tournament turned out to be a first time player and new member Luke Phillips of Oklahoma City. Phillips had the round of tournament and best round on the OKC tour since the beginning in the fall of 2023. A first round 8 under par 64, had his fellow division 1 competitors thinking about 2nd place. A nine shot lead after the first day against a talented group of players is not where I thought we would be at the end of day 1. With the course set up around 6,800 yards, 350 yards longer on day 2, there were thoughts that the leader would come back to the field at least a little. Phillips’ day 2 performance was equally impressive as he scored 8 shots better than his competitors to win by 17 strokes. He finished the 2 days with 11 birdies and 2 bogeys to post a score of 135.
Taylor Gossett and Conner Compton were battling for Rhino Roofing Player of the Year points and position of finish behind Phillips mattered. Ryan Martin playing in his 3rd tournament has been in hunt all 3 tournaments. Martin finished with score of 152 edging Compton’s 153 and Gossett’s score of 157.
Division 2
Willy Syrquin, a 5 time winner in division 3 in the DFW Chapter, was promoted to division 2 in August. He came up to Winstar and played some of his best golf. Syrquin start playing with APT in April of 2024 in division 4. He was promoted to division 3 in August of the same year and stayed there until August of 2026. His first victory didn’t come until October of 2025 and he went on to win 4 more times in D3. Syrquin’s played the DFW Chapter Finals as his first D2 tournament and finished 5th. His power off the tee, finesse around the green, and putting skills all came together for the last 2 days.
It may not have been the shot heard around the world, but if you were within 3 holes you heard it. John Behrend’s first ever hole in one came on hole 14, playing 128 yards with gusting winds. One bounce later the screaming started. He apologizes if you missed your putt. 😊 It was great being there with you John! Next year, get into the Hole in One Club. $30 for the entire year. Any hole in one gets at least $500 and one hole pays $2,500. For the rest of you don’t be a John, join the hole in one club.
On day one, former Rhino Roofing Player of the Year Jordan Wesley battled to an even par 72 to take the lead by 1 over Bobby Elles from near by Ardmore. Several players were 3 back with first round 75’s including POY contenders Kirk Russell and Joseph Robinson. Wesley started day 2 with bogeys on the first two holes to fall back into a tie with Elles who bogeyed the second hole. After 2 more bogeys on 5 & 6, Wesley dropped back but stayed close most of the day finishing with a 2 day total of 6 over par 150. Elles charged to a lead with 3 birdies and a double to stand at 1 over and a 1 shot lead over Syrquin who made the turn in 1 under 35. After an eagle 3 on the par 5 ninth hole, Robinson turned in 1 under 35 to be tied with Syrquin at 2 over, 1 back of Elles. The back nine was a back and forth battle between the 3 players with Elles seem to be a lock to win the title coming to the par 3 18th hole with water left of the green. Elles was 3 over, Robinson playing with Elles was 4 over for the tournament and Syrquin was in the clubhouse sitting at 5 over. Syrquin came to 18 tied for the lead until a double bogey left him feeling like he let it get away. However the difficult finishing hole did damage to a lot of players on the day and certainly did to the final pairings, with Elles making a double after an ill advised swipe at a putt and Robinson making a bogey 4. A 3 way tie would send the 3 players back onto the course for a 3 man playoff. With 18 being a dramatic finishing hole, the players went back to play the same hole they had finished on to see who would take home the title. Robinson pull his shot left into the water, Elles didn’t go into the water, but was down the bank in the dirt from where the water has receded due to the hot weather. Syrquin hit his shot short right of the bunker. Robinson re-teed and his shot finished next to Syrquin’s shot. Robinson got up and down for a 5, while Elles got out of the penalty area, but still had to chip onto the green. He missed his putt for a 4 and tapped in for a 5. After chipping onto the green Syrquin ran his par putt past and had a 3-4 footer for the win. He buried the putt to take home the title in a tension filled last couple of hours of the tournament.
Division 3
We had another division with good competition and a lot of drama with a lead going back an forth over the course of 18 holes. John Munno had his best round of the year in round 1 carding a 2 over par 74 to take a 4 shot lead over Ryan Miller who finished round 1 with a 6 over 78. Munno & Miller didn’t get off to a good starts on the 2nd day going out in 8 over 44 & 7 over 43 respectively. Munno clinging to a 3 shot lead to start the back nine, didn’t have his best stuff and carded a 46, 90 on the day. Miller however held strong as he played the back nine in 4 over good for a 83 to take home the title by 3 shots over Munno.
Wow, I didn’t catch it at the time, but this was Ryan Miller’s first win of year. After starting the year in division 4 and carding some good rounds only to be bested by others good rounds, Ryan has settled in division 3 as a finals champion. Congratulations Ryan, sorry I missed that.
Division 4
It has to be that the weekend was the T & T Realty Group Chapter Finals, another division with another exciting story. Landon Niles winner of the 2024 Chapter Finals and 4 time winner overall in the last 2 years lead after a really good round of 5 over 77 to start the tournament. Niles had a 1 shot lead over the soon to be Player of the Year for division 4, Bryan Jennings. As good friends the twosome was paired together in round one and then as leaders again in round two; they were rooting each other on but wanting to out perform the other and it not be that someone played bad. Both players started the final round with the lead moving back and forth as they battled it out, but they both went out in 5 over 41 to remain as the day started with Niles leading by one. A birdie 4 by Jennings on the par 5, 12th hole seem to turn the tide his way. The birdie tied up the match and Jennings managed to play the last 6 holes with only 2 bogeys while Niles struggled coming in. Jennings finished with a total of 158 over the 2 days to win by a margin of 4 shots over Niles. After a first day 81, Mike Adcock wasn’t able to challenge as he finished in 3rd place at 168. Rodney Wren up from the DFW Chapter played well on day 1, with an 82, but day 2 wasn’t as kind, however he was the winner of the closest to the pin.
Division 5
Jared Cogburn was playing a round that even APT Co-founder texted me after Cogburn had completed 14 holes. Cogburn was 5 over at the time and the comment was he was having a great round. Cogburn finished the round at 10 over 82, for a still very respectable 82 in division 5. A 7 shot lead entering day 2, Cogburn seem to be in a good position. As the round got started it was a struggle, as he went out in 49. Robert Tyndall trailing by 7, played bogey golf making the turn in 45 to pick up 4 shots on Cogburn and only trail by 3 going to the back 9 on Sunday. Cogburn and Tyndall came to the par 3 18th hole tied for the lead. Tyndall managed to make a bogey 4 while Cogburn made a triple bogey 6 to give Tyndall his 4th victory of the season and the Chapter Finals Championship. Max Flowers started the day trailing by 13 shots finished the 2nd day’s with the division’s best round of 88, 4 off of the lead.
Senior Net
With a strong performance in your division, you are normally in the hunt to win the net contest. Bryan Jennings did just that as he carded a net 5 under to win the Senior Net trophy.
Mid-Am Net
Willy Syrquin’s strong performance earn him extra money and the trophy for the contest finishing with a net score of 5 under. His 2ndday gross of 2 over netted him a 4 under round giving him the win.
