Summit Waters Invitational – The River Course at Keystone Recap
The Mile High Denver Chapter of the Amateur Players Tour concluded an outstanding weekend in the Colorado high country with the Summit Waters Invitational at The River Course at Keystone. Players were treated to another spectacular mountain day with temperatures climbing into the 70s and brilliant blue skies from the opening tee shots until the final putts dropped.
Following a difficult warm and dry winter across Colorado, The River Course emerged in excellent condition, with many players commenting on how well the course had recovered compared to many Front Range facilities. After evaluating conditions, the Keystone Tournament Director determined the championship would be played with the ball down for Sunday’s competition.
The River Course once again provided a tremendous test while delivering the incredible scenery and mountain golf experience that have made Keystone one of Colorado’s favorite destinations.
Division 1
Division 1 champion William Camping, winning his 2nd APT Denver tournament this season, continued his strong season by capturing first place with a score of 78. The battle for second place ended in a tie as Brent Aga and Greg Otto each posted rounds of 80.
Division 2
Division 2 produced some of the best golf of the weekend. Brett Miller fired an outstanding 73 to claim the Division 2 championship, trophy, and first-place prize money. Kevin Moore earned second place with a score of 78, while Gary Wayne finished third with a 79 and won 3rd place prize money.
Division 3
Division 3 featured one of the closest finishes of the tournament. Alan Reichard and Mack Mitchell both carded rounds of 79, with Alan earning the Division 3 championship after an on-course playoff. Mitchell was attempting to win both Keystone tournaments over the weekend, while Reichard was playing in his first APT tournament. The one-hole playoff on Hole #18 appeared to give Mack the edge after an exceptionally long drive and Alan’s 2nd shot clipping a tree. Mack’s second shot on the par 5 was pin high but right of the greenside bunker. Unfortunately, his ball nestled down next to a line of pebbles and the Tournament Director who had accompanied the playoff group made the ruling the ball must be played down and relief was not granted. Mack’s shot from the tough lie narrowly missed getting over the bunker. Alan’s third shot landed safely on the green about 20’ away. He two putted for par and won the 1-hole playoff, the first-place trophy and winnings. Matt Gates, Scott Rowley, and Will Hallmark shared third-place prize money after each finished with rounds of 84.
Division 4
Trent McQueen captured the Division 4 title with an excellent round of 83. Trent had an exceptional score of 38 on the back nine to win the trophy and 1st place prize money going away. Consistent performer Richard McCoy finished second with a 90, while Kirk Hulbert claimed third place with a score of 92.
Division 5
Champion Michael Elder, multi-winner on the APT Tour both in Denver and nationwide, posted a winning score of 96 to take home the trophy and first-place prize money. Joe Welch finished second with a score of 102, while Cody Canzona rounded out the top three with 103. Welch completed a remarkably successful weekend with a first place and second place finish. Once again, D5 provided some excitement for all division players.
Mid-Am Net
Brett Miller added a second trophy to his collection by winning the Mid-Am Net Championship with an outstanding net score of 68, three strokes under par. Matt Gates finished second with a net 74, while Cody Canzona earned third place with a net 75.
Senior Net
Richard McCoy and Eric Drucker tied for 1st Place in the Senior Net Competition via two different methods. McCoy was consistent shooting 36-38 = 74, while Drucker had a very impressive front nine score of 33, followed by 41 for a 74. McCoy completed his tremendously successful weekend winning the trophy via the scorecard playoff. Both players will split the points and prize money equally. A three-way tie for third place included Scott Rowley, Dennis McGraw (Utah Chapter Owner), and Gary Wayne who split 3rd place prize money.
Folds of Honor 50/50 Raffle
The Folds of Honor 50/50 Raffle once again supported a wonderful cause. Vern Rubick was the lucky winner, with both Vern and Folds of Honor receiving $145.
Closest to the Pin
The day’s Closest to the Pin contests produced plenty of excitement. On Hole #7, Eric Drucker captured closest-to-the-pin honors when his tee shot stopped just 3 feet 10 inches from the cup.
The excitement level increased on Hole #15 when visiting Kansas City Chapter member Jerry Bell nearly recorded a hole-in-one. Bell’s remarkable shot finished just 11 inches from the cup, narrowly edging Kevin Moore’s outstanding effort of 2 feet 2 inches. Bell’s shot bumped Moore out of the money, and both Bell and Drucker earned $59 for their accomplishments.
Other Notable Performances
Several players filled the scorecards with birdies throughout the day. Kevin Moore led the field with five birdies. Rizzul Karki and Brett Miller each recorded four birdies. David Berg added three birdies. Numerous other competitors carded two birdies during the round, showcasing the quality of play throughout the field.
The Summit Waters Invitational provided the perfect ending to a memorable Keystone weekend and showcased everything that makes the Amateur Players Tour special—great competition, beautiful venues, and outstanding camaraderie among players from Colorado and across the country.
Congratulations to all of our champions, prize winners, and participants for making the Summit Waters Invitational at The River Course at Keystone another tremendous success for the Mile High Denver Chapter of the Amateur Players Tour.
