Wind, Cold, and Tough Pins Define APT Stop at The Refuge
A challenging start to the day gave way to sunshine, but the scoring never followed.
The Amateur Players Tour made its stop at The Refuge Golf Club on May 3rd, where players
were met with a true test of patience and execution. A cold, breezy morning forced competitors
to grind early, and although temperatures climbed into the 70s with sunshine by the afternoon,
persistent wind and difficult Sunday pin locations ensured the course never let up.
Across every division, the theme was the same: survival over scoring.
Division 1: Goerges Battles Back for Victory
Jackson Goerges (Red Wing, MN) emerged on top in Division 1, posting a 10-over 82 in one of
the steadiest rounds of the day.
After a difficult opening stretch that included an early triple bogey, Goerges regrouped and
delivered when it mattered most. His 2-over 38 on the back nine proved to be the difference, as
he avoided big mistakes and capitalized on limited opportunities down the stretch.
A three-way tie for second at 85 (+13) included Brett Mathiowetz (New Ulm, MN), Jake Rhoades
(Blaine, MN), and Luke Stepan (Mankato, MN), all of whom battled the conditions but couldn’t
close the gap.
Division 2: Dalton Outlasts the Field
In Division 2, Mike Dalton (Chaska, MN) leaned on resilience to claim the title with an 18-over
90.
A rocky front nine put Dalton on the defensive early, but he stayed composed and avoided a
complete unraveling. His ability to steady the round—highlighted by a key birdie on the back
nine—allowed him to separate from the field in a division where consistency was hard to find.
J. Selph (Tallahassee, FL) finished second at 94 (+22), followed closely by A. Padilla (Lakeville,
MN) at 95 (+23).
Division 3: Piersak Pulls Away
Mark Piersak (Ham Lake, MN) delivered one of the most controlled rounds of the day, winning
Division 3 with a 10-over 82, finishing eight shots clear of the field.
Piersak’s 40 on the front nine set the tone, and his ability to limit mistakes throughout the round
separated him from a field that struggled to avoid big numbers.
D. Scott (Blaine, MN) and D. Nicoson (Andover, MN) tied for second at 90 (+18).
Senior Net: Scott Edges Narrow Finish
The tightest race of the day came in the Senior Net division, where Donald Scott (Blaine, MN)
claimed victory with a net 80 (+8).
Scott built his round on consistency and timely birdies, holding off a late push from Mike Dalton
(Chaska, MN), who finished just one shot back at net 81 (+9).
Mid-Am Net: Piersak Caps Strong Day
Capping off an impressive day, Mark Piersak secured a second victory, winning the Mid-Am Net
division with a net 74 (+2).
An even-par front nine and steady back-nine performance allowed him to separate from a
competitive field, with Jackson Goerges and Brett Mathiowetz tying for second at net 78 (+6).
A True Test
While the weather improved as the day went on, the scoring conditions never did. Wind
remained a factor throughout the round, and difficult pin placements demanded precision on
every approach.
In the end, the players who succeeded weren’t the ones who chased low numbers—but the
ones who stayed patient, minimized mistakes, and embraced the grind.
And on May 3rd at The Refuge, that made all the difference.
