High Drama at Moorpark: APT SoCal Chapter Tackles Tierra Rejada for the Ventura County Amateur Championships
For players searching for competitive golf tournaments near me and premier Southern California golf events, the Amateur Players Tour returned to take on Tierra Rejada Golf Club on Saturday for another event asplayers teed it up on the weekend. With temperatures in the low 70s, sunny skies, and a steady breeze throughout the afternoon, players were challenged by Tierra Rejada’s unique layout, winding tightly through canyons corridors that demanded accuracy and patience from tee to green.
Located just outside Moorpark, CA Tierra Rejada continues to provide one of the more strategic and underrated tests on the local schedule, rewarding disciplined course management while punishing wayward drives quickly. The combination of narrow visuals, awkward angles, and firm conditions kept scoring under pressure throughout the day as the Player of the Year races continue to take shape across every division.
Serving as the Ventura County Amateur Championship, the tournament hosted a field of passionate amateurs ready to square off against one of the most visually stunning—and deceptively brutal—layouts in the region.
Designed by Robert E. Cupp, the course presented a masterful mix of severe elevation changes, blind shots, and quick greens. Lets get to the action….
Division 1: Renda Extends His Reign
The flat-stick proved to be the ultimate equalizer in the Division 1 flight. While several players flashed immense power off the tee, navigating the pure, undulating greens demanded flawless touch.
Berkecem Renda, successfully avoiding the “lost valleys” off the fairways to capture the Division 1 championship title. With this critical victory, Renda firmly strengthens his lead at the top of the Player of the Year points standings. Dean Woolum put up a fierce fight, navigating the tricky canyon winds to secure a stellar second-place finish in the elite field. We wish Dean luck as he moves to the Nashville Chapter of the APT and takes up residence in Tennessee.
Division 2: Down to the Wire for Park
The battle in Division 2 was tightly contested until the final hole, providing some of the most intense drama of the afternoon. Jee Woo Park felt the pressure building but clutched up when it mattered most, executing a brilliant par on the 18th hole to protect his razor-thin margin. Park carded a magnificent 76 to capture the trophy. Jayson Huett of Los Alamitos, CA, pushed the drama all day, finishing in a well-earned second place with a strong round of 78.
Division 3: Manchester Prevails in the Battle of the Keiths
Division 3 turned into an exclusive, head-to-head showdown between Keith Manchester and Keith Muraoka. Manchester leaned heavily on his consistency, avoiding the big mistakes that Tierra Rejada’s severe canyon topography frequently inflicts. Delivering a steady performance from tee to green, Manchester posted a 79 to secure a two-shot victory over Muraoka, who kept the pressure on until the very end with his 81. Gary Lamb from Ontario, CA was contending all day until the last couple of holes got him, but he finished tied for third.
Division 4: Odegard Conquers the Canyons
In Division 4, strategic target golf triumphed over raw distance. Kurt Odegard of Anaheim Hills, CA, put together a disciplined game plan, successfully navigating the out-of-bounds hazards lurking directly past the green complexes. Odegard’s calculated approach earned him the division 4 crown. Roberto Covarrubias of Alta Dena, CA, fought hard through the tricky elevation changes to claim the runner-up spot with a score of 91.
Division 5: Ruddock Dominates for a Repeat Performance
Division 5 saw a spectacular return to the winner’s circle for John Ruddock, who previously captured the tour’s season opener at Sierra Lakes. Ruddock proved that his early-season success was no fluke, mastering the coastal sage scrub lines and high-altitude tee boxes. Carding a phenomenal 92, Ruddock outpaced the field to secure a decisive victory and cement his status as a major force on tour in division 5.
Net Championships and Side Games
The optional net flights showcased spectacular scoring as players maximized their course handicaps, resulting in some incredible tiebreaker drama.
The Mid-Am Net division required an exciting scorecard playoff after Keith Manchester and Gary Lamb of Ontario, CA, finished deadlocked. Manchester ultimately captured the title by catching fire on the back nine, firing a stellar 35 to edge out Lamb’s valiant 37. Over in the Senior Net division, Keith Muraoka bounced back from his close gross second finish to officially claim the Senior Net crown and the decanter trophy.
