Tournament Champions
The Pfau Course at Indiana University played host to another memorable stop for the Indianapolis Amateur Players Tour, and while the forecast called for rain and thunderstorms, the only storm that arrived was the incredible golf displayed throughout the field. With dark clouds looming throughout the day, players answered with birdies, clutch putts, and dramatic finishes that made for one of the most exciting tournaments of the season.
Division 1 delivered the drama from start to finish as Barney Sutley and Blake Claycomb battled neck-and-neck all afternoon, each carding impressive rounds of 73 to force a playoff. Returning to the par-5 first hole, Sutley wasted no time attacking, hitting driver followed by a towering 3-wood that left him with an eagle opportunity. Claycomb answered with a strong effort of his own, finishing just short of the green with a chip for eagle. Neither player could convert the eagle try, but Sutley calmly two-putted for birdie to seal the playoff victory and another Indianapolis APT title. Brett Taylor continued his consistent season with a solid 77 to finish in third place.
Division 2 added even more excitement with another playoff showdown. Mason Smith and Josh Brooks both posted outstanding rounds of 76 to earn extra holes. Smith stayed composed under pressure and secured the victory with a par on the first playoff hole. Tyler Whittaker finished just one shot back with a 77, while Jesse Vanvleet claimed fourth place after carding a 78.
Division 3 proved just as competitive as James Heath edged Ben Heinking by a single stroke, 79 to 80, in a tightly contested battle. Rex Meyer secured third place with an 83.
Division 4 saw Palmer Smalley continue adding hardware to his trophy collection, firing an 81 to take home first place honors. Patrick Norris finished second with an 85, while John Pfeifer rounded out the podium with an 88.
Division 5 featured another strong performance from Tyler Philo, whose impressive 87 earned him the division victory. Ray Albensi and Shannon Sageser battled throughout the day before finishing tied for second with rounds of 91.
The net competitions produced some remarkable scores as well. Tyler Philo delivered the round of the day in Mid-Am Net, posting a spectacular 7-under-par 64 to complete the “double dip” victory. Josh Brooks continued his excellent play with a 67 to take second, while Ben Heinking and Jesse Vanvleet shared third place at 68.
Senior Net crowned a first-time winner on tour as Ray Albensi fired a stellar 5-under-par 66 to capture the title by two strokes. Barney Sutley added yet another strong performance to his season résumé with a 68, good for second place, while John Pfeifer finished third after carding a 69.
With threatening weather surrounding the course throughout the day, there was uncertainty whether the event would even happen. In the end, the lightning never arrived — but exceptional golf certainly did. The Indianapolis Amateur Players Tour now turns its attention to Timbergate Golf Course on May 31st for an Elevated Event that promises even more outstanding competition.
